For this project Redfort collaborated with Western Australian artist Paula Hart and the school students to create the artwork for South Bunbury Primary School, in Western Australia. The artwork authentically captures the unselfconscious charm of the students’ drawings of Bunbury’s local bird life, translated into traditional lace bobbin stitches.

The primary school needed a secure perimeter (fences and gates) that wouldn’t feel cold or uninviting to students. The challenge was to design a safety enclosure that also serves as a canvas for creativity, involving the school community in its concept.
Redfort’s team engaged students in drawing local birds, capturing their unique perspectives. Working with artist Paula Hart, these drawings were transformed into a lace-like pattern for the fence panels. The Lalace product was the perfect medium to mimic delicate stitches in durable steel. The solution provided a strong enclosure while featuring familiar bird shapes and patterns drawn by the kids. This collaborative approach ensured the fence felt warm and meaningful rather than institutional.
The installed product is a Lalace enclosure and gate system encircling the school’s garden. Intricate metal panels display birds and motifs exactly as drawn by the students, immortalized in laser-cut or woven metal patterns. The result is a functional fence that tells a story. Each panel is a piece of art that delights children, parents, and teachers. This project demonstrated Redfort’s ability to merge community art with architectural safety products, resulting in a playful yet secure environment.
