Problem

Many highway noise barriers are functional but lack aesthetic or cultural resonance. They often become visual clichés—flat surfaces that do nothing to uplift the environment. Moreover, they are vulnerable to graffiti and wear, reducing their longevity and appeal. In a city fabric context, such barriers can feel alien or oppressive rather than harmonious.

Solution

With Dedots we turned the barrier into both protectant and storyteller. The colored dot pattern embeds imagery that speaks to Dordrecht’s heritage and local life, turning a utilitarian element into a landmark. The glass screen maintains acoustic performance while the dot overlay conceals damage and reduces the appeal of vandalism. It becomes a visual canvas that engages people rather than isolates them.

Product

Dedots is a modular dot-panel system where 3D colored dots are affixed to mesh or glass panels in fully customizable patterns. The system supports high durability, UV stability, fire safety, and seamless connections so the end surface reads as one continuous design. In the DOR project it was applied onto a glass noise barrier as a decorative and functional skin spanning 60 meters—combining sound protection and expressive urban narrative.
