The architect of a new building complex in Brooklyn asked us to design a screen that will act as fall-through protection for the roof terrace. We also aimed to complement the building’s volume. On the outside the DOTS are black, and on the inside the DOTS are provided with a chrome finish.

Roof terraces need safeguards to prevent falls, but standard protective screens are often purely functional, rigid and visually disconnected. A typical solution can disrupt the design language of the building. In many cases, safety barriers detract from the terrace’s aesthetic appeal and spatial harmony.
With Dedots we developed a screen that provides the required protection while still feeling integral to the architecture. The contrasting finishes (black outside, chrome inside) allow the screen to “disappear” or reveal itself depending on view and light. The patterning and materiality ensure the screen supports both safety and design continuity.
Dedots is a modular dot-panel mesh system in which 3D dots are affixed to supporting mesh panels. The system can be customized in density, color, finish and mounting method. It meets structural, fire and performance requirements while offering visual flexibility. In this project Dedots was used as a safety screen that combines fall protection with architectural expression.
