Conversion of a residential and commercial building with 10 apartments. The staircase and balcony areas are decorated with a functional safeguard screen with a ivy pattern.

Problem

An older residential/commercial building needed to update its exterior stair and balcony railings to meet modern safety codes. The client wanted to avoid plain bars or glass and instead sought a creative solution that would add privacy and style. The challenge was to implement fall-proof screens on open corridors and balconies without making residents feel caged in.

Solution

Redfort designed a custom Lalace metal mesh with an ivy leaf motif to serve as the new railing infill. These screens run the full height of staircases and along balcony edges. The pattern has frequent enough wires to prevent climbing or accidents, yet is open enough to allow light and air through. The ivy design connects the building to nature, softening the look of the concrete and metal. The installation process involved fitting these panels to existing structural frames, effectively retrofitting safety into the building’s design.

Product

The final product is a series of green-coated Lalace panels attached to the exterior walkways and balconies of the building. The color and pattern mimic ivy climbing the facade, which is aesthetically pleasing and also provides a degree of privacy for the apartment windows behind. These panels act as both railing and facade accent. Redfort’s solution met safety requirements and significantly improved curb appeal, illustrating how an architectural fabric can refresh and secure an older building in one go.
